There are many ways that you can help combat modern slavery:

Educate yourself: Learn about the different forms of modern slavery and how to identify the signs of exploitation.  The more you know, the better equipped you will be to take action.

You could

  • Invite a speaker from SAMS to come and talk to your organisation
  • Organise and/or attend a Hidden Voices course run by SAMS.
  • Read reports about modern slavery

Support anti-slavery organisations: Many non-profit organisations work to combat modern slavery.  Consider supporting these organisations through donations or by volunteering your time.

Shop responsibly: Be conscious of where the products you buy come from.  Look for products that are certified as ethically sourced and, when possible, avoid products that are known to be associated with forced labour.

Speak out: Use your voice to raise awareness about modern slavery and to advocate for change.  Write to your elected officials, share information on social media, and talk to your friends and family about the issue.

Report: If you see a situation that concerns you tell someone.

  • If there is an emergency and someone is in immediate danger, call 999.
  • To report any non-emergency suspicious activity in your area, call your local police on 101 or go to your local police station.
  • For advice or support on a modern slavery issue, call the Modern Slavery Helpline on 08000 121 700.  It operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
  • Call Crime Stoppers 0800 555 111.  They guarantee that the information you provide remains anonymous.
  • If the concern relates to an organisation you are involved with, you must inform your safeguarding officer, if there is one.

If you worry that your concerns will not be listened to or that you might have misinterpreted what you have seen, remember what DCI Kerry Lovelace of Surrey Police has said on many occasions:

‘You will not know if yours is the first, last or middle piece of information that might lead to a case of modern slavery being discovered.  I will always deploy my officers to investigate reported concerns only to find some are not cases of modern slavery knowing that we will find the one case that is.’

By taking these steps, you can help to make a difference in the fight against modern slavery.  Remember, even a small action can have a big impact.
